This is where text summarization comes in.

Text summarization is the task of generating a summary of a given piece of text. The summary should be short and to the point, highlight the most important information in the original text, and give the reader a good idea of what the text is about.

There are several methods for automatic text summarization, but in recent years, deep learning has shown promise as a powerful tool for this task. Deep learning is well suited for this task because it can automatically learn to extract relevant information from raw data.

This tutorial will show you how to use deep learning to build a text summarizer using Github data. We will use a longform Github issue as our input data, and train a model to generate a summary of the issue.

In this repository, we tackle the problem of automatic text summarization and build a deep learning model using a recurrent neural network (LSTM) to generate summaries from scratch. We also show how to use this model to perform extractive summarization by selecting relevant sentences from the text.

We trained our models on the CNN/Daily Mail dataset, which is widely used for this task and is available in this repository. We also experimented with a smaller dataset of 100 articles to create a baseline for comparison.

This is an implementation of the TextRank algorithms described in the paper “TextRank: Bringing Order into Texts” by Rada Mihalcea and Paul Tarau. The original paper can be found here. In this implementation, we use a bidirectional LSTM as our feature extractor instead of the unidirectional dependency parser used in the original paper.

There are two versions of the code, one in Python and one in Lua. The Lua code is based on the excellent lua-graph library.


We evaluate our models on two standard text summarization datasets, the Gigaword corpus and the CNN/Daily Mail corpus. We find that our models outperform previous state-of-the-art methods on both datasets by a significant margin.

Future Work

There is still a lot of work to be done in the field of text summarization with deep learning. However, the current state of the art methods are very promising and have shown excellent results on various standard datasets.

In the future, we hope to see more research on this topic, specifically on how to further improve the performance of these models. Additionally, it would be interesting to investigate how these models can be applied to other tasks such as question answering and machine translation.


To conclude, we have seen how to use deep learning for extractive text summarization on a Github repository. We have looked at how to preprocess the data using NLTK, how to build a neural network using Keras, and how to train and evaluate the model. We have also seen how to use the model to generate summaries for new repositories.
