Introduction

In this lesson, we’ll be learning how to draw flowers with color. By using a few simple techniques, we can make our drawings more realistic and vibrant.

First, let’s start with some basic colors. For our flower, we’ll be using red, yellow, and green. You can use whatever colors you like for your flower, but these are the colors we’ll be using for this tutorial.

Next, let’s choose a light source. This will be the direction that the light is coming from in our drawing. For this flower, we’ll say that the light is coming from the top left.

Now that we have our colors and light source chosen, let’s start drawing!

Sketching the Flower

Sketching the flower first will help you place the color correctly. Start by drawing the center of the flower and then draw the petals radiating out from the center. Draw the stamen in the center of the flower. If your flower has different types of petals, make sure to draw them in different sizes.

Adding the First Layer of Color

The first layer of color is the most important, as it will set the tone for the rest of the painting. To begin, choose a light color that will be the main hue throughout the painting. This could be something like yellow, orange, or pink. Next, add a few darker colors around the edges of each flower. These shades will create depth and dimension in the final painting. Finally, add a few highlights with a very light color or white. This will help to create a sense of light and space in the floral arrangement.

Adding the Second Layer of Color

Now that the initial layer of color is complete, it’s time to add a second layer. This layer will help add depth and dimension to the flower.

To start, mix a tiny bit of white paint with the color you used for the first layer. This lightened color will be used for the middle of the petals. Add this color to the center of each petal, using a light pressure.

Next, use a slightly darker shade of your original color to add shadow along the edge of each petal. Add this color to the outside edge of each petal, using a light pressure.

Finally, use a very dark shade of your original color to add even more shadow along the edge of each petal. Add this color to the outside edge of each petal, using a heavy pressure.

Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Adding the Third Layer of Color

Once you have the basic shape and two colors down, it’s time to add a third layer of color. This will help give your flower more depth and dimension.

To do this, start by adding a third color to the center of your flower. Then, add a touch of this same color to the tips of each petal. Finally, use a very light touch of this color along the edge of each petal.

Now is also a good time to add any final details, like stamen or pistils. Once you’re happy with your drawing, erase any remaining pencil lines and enjoy your beautiful flower!

Finishing Touches

When you’re finished adding color to your flowers, you can add some final touches to make them look their best. First, take a step back and look at your work to see if there are any areas that need more color or shading. Once you’re happy with the overall coloring, you can add some highlights by lightly coloring over the petals with a white colored pencil or pen. You can also use a white pen or pencil to add small dots of color in the center of each flower. Finally, erase any pencil lines that are still visible. Once you’re finished, your flowers should look bright and vibrant!
